about

Some quotes from the late Talk Talk frontman Mark Hollis, that have really influenced me:

“Before you play two notes, learn how to play one note. And don't play one note unless you've got a reason to play it."

“The silence is above everything, and I would rather hear one note than I would two, and I would rather hear silence than I would one note.”

He also spoke about his search for “The most beautiful sound next to silence”, which was the inspiration for the title of this EP.

Talk Talk’s Spirit of Eden record, along with listening to Brian Eno, Harold Budd, Jon Hassell and Miles Davis has completely redefined how I not only create, but how I understand music and sound. Sonically, this EP is very different from the rest of my work, and was very inspired by the work of Harold Budd.

I’ve heard several artists speak about how the silence between the notes is as much a part of the music as the note itself. What would it look like if we applied that thinking to life?

We’re at a point in history where we desperately need silence. Silence from the overload of information and the media. Silence from the constant cacophony of opinions and narcissism of social media. Silence from our own wants and silence from all of us asserting our rights.

Meanwhile we refuse to listen to the only One Who actually has anything worth saying; the One Who created us. The one sound that truly is even more beautiful than silence is the Vox Dei; the Voice of God.

Has the COVID-19 pandemic taught us nothing? How tragic.

Perhaps it’s time that all of us shut up and just listened?

“When the author walks on to the stage the play is over...when you see the whole natural universe melting away like a dream and...something it never entered your head to conceive - comes crashing in; something so beautiful to some of us and so terrible to others...something so overwhelming that it will strike either irresistible love or irresistible horror into every creature.” C.S Lewis ... more
