about

“Relics” is like my sketch pad; it’s an anthology of outtakes, experiments, demos etc. Some ideas bear fruit in later WindHymn releases (For example, I later felt that “To The Place Where The Streams Flow (Redux)” deserved a proper release as an EP in its own right, while “One Step At A Time” became “There’s Beauty Between The Cracks” and ended up being released under my An Arresting Strangeness project). Others were tracks that I liked, but somehow felt they didn’t really fit on the release they were intended for (“They Swim In Honey”) so were later reworked.

The cover art was created from the same batch of photographs which were used for the covers of “My Splendour Has Become My Ruin”/“My Ruin Has Become My Splendour” I think this old farm machinery I found in a field while out hiking was just so interesting, and what I did with the image here makes certain details easier to see, while still maintaining the mystery that originally led me to take the photographs in the first place.

I loved using this particular image so much, and I even thought about finding out who owned this pile of junk to ask them if I could buy it. But then, like with so many things, if I took it out of its context, being almost forgotten about and overgrown in a field next to a woodland that my family used to farm when I was little, it would lose much of what I love about it.

“When the author walks on to the stage the play is over...when you see the whole natural universe melting away like a dream and...something it never entered your head to conceive - comes crashing in; something so beautiful to some of us and so terrible to others...something so overwhelming that it will strike either irresistible love or irresistible horror into every creature.” C.S Lewis ... more
